ETYMOLOGY

"Myths are public dreams, dreams are private myths." - Joseph Campbell

ORIGIN OF THE NAME “JADA”

The name of a fishing boat my father’s family used in the village of Castellammare del Golfo (Castle by the Sea), a city in northern Sicily.  My father was born near there and emigrated to the United States at age 11. I will leave it up to your imagination as to how much of this is actually factual.

ORIGIN OF XCV

These Roman numerals actually represent the number “95”; a score we believe represents the quality of our wines.  More importantly, it stands for ex-cardiovascular surgeon, a goal I hope to achieve very soon.

ORIGIN OF “1149”

Our white wines all have numbers rather than letters, a tradition begun with XCV and suggested by our Operations Manager. 1149 is the extension to the ICU unit at my hospital and a tribute to our cardiac
surgical intensive care nurses who have spent hours and hours caring for my patients after open-heart surgery. They are a wonderful team.

ORIGIN OF “88”

No, it is not a tribute to Dale Earnhardt Jr., although I do think he is great.  “88” refers to the number I wore while playing football for the Delaware Fighting Blue Hens, but of course, all of you knew that, right?

ORIGIN OF JERSEY GIRL

In honor of my lovely wife, Robyn, who was born there.  I love both Bruce Springsteen’s and Tom Wait’s versions of  “Jersey Girl” and I expect you will hear it frequently in the tasting room if you are there for any length of time.  It is a great song and Robyn is a great woman, mother, and wife.

ORIGIN OF HELL’S KITCHEN

An area of the west side of New York that still exists today.  The TV show did not come up with that name.  It was an area initially populated by slaves and then immigrants from all over the world upon their arrival in Manhattan.  It is also the neighborhood in which my parents met and fell in love.

ORIGIN OF MALSTRIA

“Malstria”  has a dual-meaning for me.  It means “mirror” in Etruscan, of which I tell my children we are descendants (yes, they roll their eyes, too), and is a reference to Lake Mirror in my adopted home of Lakeland, Florida.  Lake Mirror is often the center for gatherings, charitable events, Fourth of July celebrations, etc., and the “Malstria” name is a tribute to it and the city that has brought me so much peace and satisfaction over the years.

ORIGIN OF PASSING BY

TTB rules require there be no reference to anything related to health or medicine on a wine label.  I perform coronary artery bypass frequently.  The name has been reversed to protect the innocent.

It has since taken on a life of its own.  It now has a mystical, Zen-like quality.  You are free to reflect on what you/we are passing by.

ORIGIN OF JACK OF HEARTS

The truth is I actually am a practicing heart surgeon, not just a farmer.  It is true my real appellation is Jack.  It is another story why my second name is John.

ORIGIN OF STRAYTS

Our tribute to the much-maligned merlot varietal that grows so incredibly well on our vineyard soils.  Forget “Sideways” and enjoy Jada merlot.  Strayts refers to the Straits of Messina, a body of water that separates Italy from Sicily.

For those literary scholars amongst you, it may have been the inspiration for the legend of Scylla and Charybdis, described by Homer in the Odyssey.  No sea monsters or whirlpools here.

ORIGIN OF WCS

Our tribute to our loyal wine club members, many of whom been with us since the beginning and tasted our inaugural 2005 vintage.  These wines are made specifically for the enjoyment of our wine club members and will only be available for purchase and in shipments to our Wine Club members.

WCS represents “wine connoisseur series” or “wine cooperage series” or simply “wine club series”.  Come up with your own acronym and make these wines your own.  This series was created entirely for you all, who continue to make this dream possible.
